Banff in October: The Cheapest, Quietest Month in the Park
The summer crowds have gone and the ski crowds have not arrived. October in Banff is half empty, considerably cheaper, and about half the attractions are shut. Here is which half.

There is a fortnight in Banff, roughly the middle of October, when the summer visitors have gone home and the ski season has not started. Hotel rates drop by half. Restaurants take walk-ins. You can park. It is the local's favourite month and nobody advertises it, because half the town is closed.
What is open
- The townsite, and most of its restaurants, though some take their annual break.
- Banff Upper Hot Springs, which is at its best when it is cold out.
- The Banff Gondola to Sulphur Mountain, running year round.
- Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, though Moraine Lake Road closes for the season in October, so check before you plan around it.
- Johnston Canyon, Tunnel Mountain, Sundance and most of the low-elevation trails.
- The Cave and Basin and the Whyte Museum, which is exactly the kind of thing you finally have time for.
What is closed or closing
- Moraine Lake Road, for the winter.
- Most of the high alpine trails, once snow arrives, which it does.
- Lake Minnewanka boat cruises, which finish in early October.
- Several Icefields Parkway services.
- Ski hills, until roughly the second week of November.
The weather, honestly
October in Banff is genuinely unpredictable. You can get twenty degrees and shirtsleeves, and you can get thirty centimetres of snow. Often in the same week. Pack for both, and treat any high hike as conditional.
The upside of the ambiguity: fresh snow on the peaks with gold larch below and no ice on the roads yet is the single best photographic window of the year in the Bow Valley.
Why it is worth the gamble
Prices. A room that is four hundred dollars in July is often under two hundred in mid-October. The Trans-Canada is quiet. Lake Louise's lakeshore, which is a slow-moving crowd in August, is a walk.
If you have been to Banff in summer and found it busier than you wanted, this is the month to come back.
Getting there
Calgary International to Banff is about ninety minutes on the Trans-Canada, and in October that is usually a clean run with no ice and no traffic. It is also the month when the first serious snowfall can arrive without warning, which is when a professional driver and a properly equipped vehicle stops being a luxury.
We run fixed-rate YYC to Banff transfers year round, with flight tracking so a delayed arrival does not become a problem, and vehicles that are already on winter tires by the middle of the month.
